Advent Candle lighting

One: Imagine if you will Two friends out for a walk and one says I like  waking up in the morning,  and wondering what the new day will hold for me.

All : God’s love is awakening in our souls once more as the promise of Emmanuel know draws near. It is a small flame in our hearts.   It is love that calls us to waken from a long night to the breaking of a new dawn. The light of God’s love is streaming into our lives. By the way, why are you picking up pine cones.

One:  They will become ornaments in the house. I will decorate them and set them where the sun will make them sparkle.

All:  God decorates our lives with his love in all the small gifts that we are given each day.  Those little moments that warm our hearts   It is like waking in the morning with the first rays of the sun warming you as you wipe away the sleep from your eyes.

One:  Yes God’s love comes into the world wakens us to the possibilities that love can accomplish. God’s love burning bright.

All: So we will light a candle of love a celebration to the promise of God with us as the light of Christmas dispels the dark and we come to that moment when light comes once more into the world.

A Candle is Lit.

 Prayer

Hymn 7

Love is a flame that burns in our heart.
Jesus has come and will never depart.

When God is a child there's joy in our song.
The last shall be first and the weak shall be strong,
and none shall be afraid.

Prayer Confession

God of Love as we gather in community, we tell stories of your personal care. You cradle our very selves. From this experience of your commitment we are motivated to feed the hunger in our midst. In your name, we continue to seek wholeness, through sheltering, healing, and sustaining our sisters and brother. Yet we expect you to respond to our every need and grant us special favours. Forgive us and restore in us a love for you that helps us to see ourselves more clearly value the gift of life you entrust to us and appreciate the worth of our brothers and sister. Lord hear our personal prayers of confession

Sermon

Needed a bit of a break from all the Christmas music. Some guy keeps singing about dreaming about a white Christmas.  We all know we are supposed to be going Green.  Out with Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, and in with ABBA.  The music can be somewhat seasonally related. Like SOS, or Money Money Money must be funny in a rich man’s world, dreams of my last summer or Take a Chance. Take a Chance on me.

I don’t often take chances. I am United Church most of my big decisions are made by calling a committee and having a casserole

I did a chance when I applied to University. I was not known for my academic prowess

Trent University took a chance.  Perhaps saw something others did not and took me. I did spend a year on academic probation.

I have learned to perhaps take chances.

I took a chance and picked up a paint brush, a spatula a camera.

In this moment stop and look at the chances you have taken, take a moment to think on what you have created, accomplished seen.

All things are possible with God.

God believes in us.

Imagine what it must to been like to be Mary

What was she doing, baking bread, cleaning house, looking out the window at the tree in the garden?  When standing next to her is an angel of the Lord, like one of the top four players.  Let’s be honest from a complete human stand point.  Your there and an angel of the Lord appears and says your name.  You are going to need a change of nickers.

Then Mary said, "Here am I the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.  The gospeller makes Mary sound so serene.

But one thing is for sure Mary is bold. She listened and took the chance.

She right there and then gave herself over to God/ Anything is possible with the Lord.

Did she know what was to come? No She trusted and believed took the hand of the Holy Spirit and moved forward. Mary took the chance.

Granted after a second thought Mary did kind of wonder “hmm how will I explain this one to Joe.

Joe Comes home from a busy day of working in the city of Sepphoris not all that far from Nazareth. Bit of a commute, there was  traffic a horse threw a shoe backed up things for minutes.

Joe comes in table all set, fresh wicks and oil in the lamps lit on the table (really not a lot of choice) favorite meal Bread and fish. Old family recipe.  Just going for a second helping of hummus and Mary says and by the way the an Arch Angel of the Lord   Gabriel dropped in this afternoon for Tea, just to let me know that the Spirit of Lord was going to be upon me and I am going to bear the Son of God. We are going to name him Jesus and that same spirit will make me pregnant. More bread.

Tense moments so it is no wonder God had to visit Joeseph in a dream to smooth things over.   And Joeseph took a chance. He said yes to the endless possibility of God.

We Spend a lot of time thinking of what we can't do as compared to what we can.

This is a reminder of what God can do,  how God touches our lives  Touches our lives with Love.  For nothing is impossible with God.  We just have to believe.

Some people never believe in themselves. They are never content with were they are. They lament and see everything as God against them.

Some people see life as something to hold them back blaming others blaming God for whatever has happened in their life.  We ask God to change our lives rather than asking God for the courage to or the strength to face what life has dealt us. The courage to follow the path that life has set for us.

This Past Thursday was the Winter  Solstice.  It is the first day of winter,    the days begin there patient march back towards the longer day and life returning to the world.  The celebration of the birth of Jesus is where it is because this is the time of light breaking into the world, those lengthening days.  The love of God breaking into the world in the light of Christ illuminating all the potential that is there to be realized.

Today is a reminder of how much God loves us that when we accept God's leading we believe in ourselves all things are possible. Even virgin births. In response to the love of God we say yes here am I your servant O lord let it be me according to your will.   We are called to share that love. By encouraging others to see their value and their potential. Helping them see That with God through Christ and in the power of the Holy Spirit all things are possible.  My prayer for you has not change. Be here in this moment.

and look at all that you have accomplished. Find a moment to not think of “what next”,  to not worry about having to be there, or plagued by the endless list of to do    Take a breath of Christmas coming, Christmas here. To savoir the light coming into the darkness.  To find that moment to rest in God’s embrace In Gods Hope, Gods Peace, God’s Joy but most of all God’s love and know That we are just not alone. God is with us.

Prayers of the people

Slow me Down  Slow me Down

Still my restless mind Still my restless mind

Quell my fears Quell my Fears

Quench my Thirsty soul Quench my thirsty Soul

Fill me with your love Fill me with your love

God of Truth God of Truth

God of love   God of love

God of chances.  You have extended yourself in the promise of a new beginning brought to us in a child. A child of hope, of peace, joy and most of Love.  Fill us with courage of Mary and Joesph to take that chance and be bold in who we are as a people of faith. Help us to believe in ourselves and much as you believe in us.  For in faith we know that all things are possible.

In that we know that we can name before you all that is broken in your world.

For in faith, we know that all things are possible.  In that we know we can name those in our lives that need strength, to face the challenges that life have presented.

We name those who we are called to walk with in our lives.

In faith all things are possible in this belief we ask O God to hold us in this moment. Hold us here to name our hopes. Hold us here to know your peace in our soul.  Hold us here to name the joys in our lives. Hold us here to name the love that we have known. The love we have felt surround us from those who are a now a part of the Saints of heaven. The love of those we walk with us in our lives. Your love which encircles us.

For it is not by chance that you have chosen us.  We offer the great prayer which binds us as one saying Our Father.

Offering

We give thee but thy own.   The work of the Church continues and there are three ways you can continue to support that work.   Consider using PAR, use the donate button on our Web Site or drop your gift at the Manse.   Let us make our offering and give thanks.

The amazing gift of One who fully embodied your intention for humanity prompts us to make a grateful response. In Christ we have known a love that will not let us go. Through our offerings we would share this love in our community and to the ends of the earth. Amen
