Opening Prayer

Lord Jesus, we are gathered here today because we want to see you more clearly, love you more dearly follow you more nearly. We long to gaze into you face, to understand your ways, to hear clearly your summons to us.  Your way is not always clear to us We debate among ourselves just what you would have us do to be faithful and then do nothing at all. Give us patience to let you disclose yourself to us on your terms rather than ours Give us the grace to let you be who you are for rather than whom we would have you be. Help us Lord to follow in your way. Amen

Sermon

I was watching the news the other morning and there is a serious controversy brewing in Montreal. No its not about signage. It’s about bagels.  A rather prominent Montreal bagel bakery has started to produce a bagel without a hole.  Can a bagel be a bagel without the bagel hole  With no hole you get that much more spreadable surface.  Is a bagel without a bagel all just a bun?  Is it the flavour, texture and bagel baking technique that makes a bagel a bagel? A local Rabbi even spoke (not from a theological standpoint) and said by virtue of the name Bagel which translates bracelet must have its bangle bagel  hole to be considered a bagel.  No bagel worth the salt on it could be considered an authentic bagel with out its hole.  A holeless bagel is but a bun and not authentic to what a bagel should be.   One could make the same argument about Pretzels vs Pretzel buns but I digress.   What makes something authentic?

I was at a dinner a while back and one of the guest was rather excited for me to look at a ring they bought at a thrift shop. The seller said that it was a semi precious gem stone set in Silver.   And then they asked me what I thought.    The thing about asking someone what they think is that they might just tell you what they think.

Let’s look at the ring.  Skip looking at the stone. Look inside the ring.  What markings are there?  Does it say Stirling silver? Does it say 925 (coin silver) or does it say nothing.  What does it smell like? Silver has a distinctive smell.    The stone, looked like a very pale amethyst or glass.  I didn’t have my magnifying loop to really look at it. Bottom line. It was not silver, the stone might be something of interesting but why would you set a good stone in a white metal.   Not real its costume jewelry and yes you paid to much for it.  I am sorry.

Does Speaking with Authority make a difference.

In the opening of Matthew and Luke We  find the genealogies. They have to be the least read vs in Matthew and Luke      Matthew traces Jesus’ ancestry from Abraham to King David  and Luke from Joseph to Adam.  The language in the end is interesting in that Adam is referred to the Son of God. (Does that make him Jesus’ brother?)  The question is what is the purpose for this?

Just like country folk today who your “people” are is important. You know how it goes. Now John was Twila and John Sn boy you know his grand parents founded the feed mill  Matthew and Liz and so on.   Who is this Jesus person who is doing all this preaching Well you know him, he was Joseph and Mary’s first born.  Yes, and you know there was some talk that She might have been in that way before they Married.

Always remember that the Gospelers are writing after a couple of centuries after the events.   WHO is this Jesus person.  Well we write him a genealogy and give him a legitimate family.

Mark takes a different approach.  Like last week Mark has Jesus out about doing some demon casting and healing work.  Teaching in the Temple and the like.   People are impressed. As we read in Mark.

They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.

They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, “What is this? A new teaching—with authority! He  commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”  At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.

We see more of the same this week.

As soon as they  left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.  Now Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once.  He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them.

You have to admire Simon’s mother in law for her fortitude. One minute in bed with a fever next minute up and about whipping up tea and sandwiches for the house guests.    The word gets out and   That evening, at sunset, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed by demons.  And the whole city was gathered around the door.  And he cured many who were sick with various diseases and cast out many demons, and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.

Again nothing of great interest, no gems of wisdom.  Yet we do see Mark’s great plan of keeping Jesus’ identity a secret. Jesus   cast out many demons, and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.  If you can name it you have power over it.  This is known as Mark’s Messianic Secret. Jesus is not to be known until he enters Jerusalem.

Church over Simon's house in Capernaum

At one of the gatherings at the new Churches this past week I had an interesting talk with some folks about Holy Relics, pieces of the cross, a thorn from Christ’s Crown a finger bone of a Saint.

In the early times in the Church folk really wanted these types of things. People saw them as a means to have a direct connection with the divine.   There was a bustling trade for relics, these authentic …well maybe not so authentic relics. What Mark is doing in these opening stories of    Jesus preaching and healing is demonstrating that Jesus is the authentic promised one of God.

Mark is establishing Jesus in his ministry. Look at this Jesus Person spoken to us by John and baptized by him, He teaches with authority and he heals and cast out demons.  He does all of this with Authority so he must be authentic.

After the ascension and Pentecost event this new way of believing started by Jesus begins to take root.  The teachings are all oral. People are sharing the stories of Jesus.  We know that any good story tellers do tend to  trim the stories a little. By the time of the Gospels are written people had heard of this Jesus and his believers were spreading.

With the writing of the stories who Jesus was, was lost as there was no one left who actually knew him So the Gospellers need to establish who he is and that he is the authentic Messiah.

Well this is all rather interesting. How does this speak to us today.

That is a rather good question.

We are the heirs of the Faith and so we have accepted Jesus as the authentic Son of God.  We know who Jesus is, so we don’t need the family history so to speak to see who Jesus is.  We accept Jesus authenticity on Faith.

This scripture reminds the reader that in claiming the faith and being a follower of Christ one must first be bold in their faith and their proclamation of the Gospel  To Speak with Authority. Not just to speak with authority but to be authentic in what we are saying.  Not to provide lip service.. Oh ya Jesus is the man and I am his. But speak with Authenticity.  Perhaps the quiet truth of God being present.

With Confidence I feel that we as a community of faith act with authentic love of God and when we proclaim the gospel we do so inspired by being open to the authority of the Holy Spirit.

What we are reminded of  is not rest   on our laurels and lose sight of what it is to be authentic in our faith.  To love unconditionally, seek out ways to empower people and support them in their live journey.   To live our faith not with an authority that lords it over others but with an authority that speaks of a quiet confidence in who are as a community of Faith.

May we see in these lessons a reminder of who are. A reminder to be real in what we believe and confident in what we believe and know that as we grow in our faith, we grow in the knowledge that we are not alone.  Thanks be to God.

Prayers of the people

Slow me Down  Slow me Down

Still my restless mind Still my restless mind

Quell my fears Quell my Fears

Quench my Thirsty soul Quench my thirsty Soul

Fill me with your love Fill me with your love

God of Truth God of Truth

God of love   God of love

God whose reality extends beyond the human Imagination.  We have come by faith to know that you are with us always. We encounter you through the wisdom of Your Son Jesus. We feel your presence in Holy Spirit and the moments of spiritual encounter and understanding in our lives.  You remind us to be firm in our faith and true to who we are as your people.   Still we find ourselves in a world that has ignored or does not know what kindness is.  A world torn by conflict and self serving. A world that one nation can claim the right to defend but only at the cost of vengeance or expansion.  As your heart cries for your creation so to we in faith lift up our prayers for the world.

We lift up prayers for all of your people who find this life a great burden. Who find themselves separate from a sense of wholeness.  As Jesus healed the sick of body and broken of mind and soul so we too pray for them.

We pray for those whom we are called to walk with. May they know your grace surrounding them and may we know your strength to walk with them. We name them before you.

We know you all around us in the wonder that each new day brings O God.  May we be blessed to have the wisdom to find you in each day and know that you are with us. We offer our own prayers in the silence of our hearts and offer the great prayer which binds us as one saying Our Father…
