Call To worship

One:  Welcome one another, as Mary prepares to welcome her babe.

All:   We greet God's children in exuberant joy

One:  Let none be a stranger.

All:   Let none be cast aside.

One:  Hospitality, warmth and compassion for all.

All:   Community, celebration and feasting in God's presence.

One:  Let us receive the blessings of God.

All:   Let us be a blessing to others.

One To all things there is a season

All A time for every purpose Under heaven.

One For God in the wisdom of creation created all things to exist in Balance.

All For in balance we find the center and center is the divine light within each of us.

One  Our world has lost its balance. .  The Scales have tipped Despair, War, Sorrow, Hate weigh heavy.   The burdens of hate weigh as a millstone around societies neck.

All  Love is Lost is the darkness of Hate.

One, Still into the darkness the light of Love breaks in in the promise of a child who shall be the light to the world.  Hope can be a means to know peace.  In the peace with can find Joy. Love binds hope, peace and joy together. They create the great light of God in which the darkness can never overcome.

All  We place this measure of Love to begin to bring balance back to the world.

One: In this moment in this time we can see what the balance which God intends can look like.  We will live in hope that the world will come to know this balance.

One We light this Candle a Candle of Love to dispel the darkness, the light of the Divine shines at the center of all things.

Hymn 7 vs 4

Prayer God of creation. You created all things to be held in balance.

For where there is hatred there is love.   Love is the that which binds us to you and to each other.  We own that at times we may not be in that right relationship with others or ourselves. That at times we live with brokenness and hold onto anger.  Help us to trust in you that your light will dispel the shadows of anger. As we wait in anticipation for the renewal of your Gift of love in Jesus may we find ways to strive for truth and reconciliation with in ourselves and each other allowing your love to light our way.   Amen

All: (sung) In God we live and move and have our story.

In love God lives in us and makes us whole

O Jesus may we hear the Word that calls us near.

Your story makes a home within our soul.

Your story makes a home within our soul

One Where do you find Love?

All In the Word.

One Then let us listen for Gods joy in our lesson taken Romans 1:1-17

One In this time of expectation may we find direction in Gods teaching in Christ our Lord  Our Gospel is taken from of Gospel    Matthew 1:18-25

This is the word of the Lord

All Thanks be to God

Prayer
Lord as we ponder your words open our hearts that we may understand and know you. Amen
Sermon

I have had a lot of car time lately which means pondering. Which leads me to the thought you know if you are not Christian you maybe should not be making it into your holiday. It is A Christian thing I can remember  listening to a CBC program where the topic was  “Why adopt Christmas if not a Christian. “ This is one of my Pius Stumps to stand on.       The guest expert was speaking of Christmas programs and movies and how they bring us joy.  Which of course they do. They spoke of the movie from the Christian based movies such as a Christmas Carol, or it’s a wonderful life to more secular ones such as     “Home alone.”   A story of a boy discovering that he can fend for himself without her family she said.  At this point I sounded like my father watching a hockey game on TV and began talking to the Radio.  Honestly I said did you even watch the movie.   Kevin the main character goes to church on Christmas Eve, He has the heart warming transformation as he prays for his family to be there on Christmas morning,  The change of heart.  Oh it is all about Christmas. The Radio did not respond.

I could go really full on  papal call to crusade.   Save Christmas once and for all.   Bah humbug Amen

Yet once more as I shuffled papers in the archeology of my desk.    Ten Things you can’t do at Christmas and Follow Jesus. By the Rev Mark Sandlin who at the time was serving at  Oh Hmm, I hope eating chocolate is not one of them.

The Rev Sandlin counts down from 10. Ten threw five make sense a nd then came number Four        An Epiphany before Epiphany. Through open the shutters and call to the boy in the street. What day is it boy.

   4) Insist Your Religious Celebration Rule Them All — This time of year far too many Christians remind me of Gollum and his Precious. (A Lord of the Rings shout out in a Christian Christmas post! C’mon Peter Jackson, give me some promo love!) One holiday to rule them all: “We nee-eeds it. They stole it from us!”  my precious

Never mind that Jesus was Jewish or that there is a list of other celebrations that occur this time of year, there’s a certain cultural privilege in the air that seems so very un-Christian to me. You can just about bet that the folks calling out for the dominance of Christmas would be singing a new song if Judaism were the dominant religious culture and this time of year radio stations across the land played hanukah songs. Well, metaphorically they would be singing a new song — maybe a few even literally.

Oh I didn’t take time to consider this.

Three addressed another very popular rant.  Happy Holidays.  Very un Christian

3) Get Mad About “Happy Holidays” — On a related note, you know what “holiday” is short for, right? Holy day. Do you really have a problem with people calling Christmas a holy day?

Well know after all Good bye is a contraction of God by with you. And Will is a contraction of William. Lord only knows where Bill came from sounds to much like Phil. Especially when the Starbucks Barista is yelling your name above an espresso  machine.

Number 2 I knew about

2) Think That It Is Actually Jesus’ Birthday — Um. So, dang, this is hard and I’m really sorry to be the one telling you. Um, let’s see. Remember how when you were growing up the Sunday school teacher told you it was Jesus’ birthday? Yeah. Well, um ... they lied. Yeah. Sorry about that. We don’t actually know when Jesus was born. It was probably in the spring or summer because “the shepherds watched their flocks by night” — something that definitely didn’t happen in the winter.

Sandlin’s last point is that we Confuse the Religious Observance With the Secular Holiday — It may be that Dec. 25 was picked as the date to celebrate Jesus’ birth to compete with or even to adopt the followers of the pagan celebration of Saturnalia, which included decorating with evergreens, gift giving and parties. (Hmmm, why does that seem so familiar?) I bring this up to make a simple point; A lot of our “War on Christmas” problems would rightfully go away if we simply acknowledged that there are two celebrations of Christmas each year. One is religious and one is not. Most of this article actually points to the issues that happen when we conflate them. So, let’s stop doing it.

 Let’s stop doing it?

Yes.  For in putting the “do not trespass” electrified barb wire fence around Christmas what we are truly doing is setting a no trespass electrified barb wire fence around Jesus. How can the joy of the gospel be spread, the good news of this great gift be shared if it is just for us.

Let’s be honest most of the treasured Christmas traditions are first of all borrowed from more ancient pre Christian traditions and the Christmas that we know is kind of a invented by the Victorians.    What matters is not the trappings but transformative love that comes into our lives.

Our story is truly about saying yes.  Mary, Elizabeth,  Joeseph and in time John and Jesus all say  “Yes” They knew that this would be bigger than themselves.  They knew deep in their souls that this would make a difference.

We are coming to that moment when we own once more that this child that was to be born would bring joy, An everlasting joy in that even in the face of great sadness would remind us that we have life because of that gift. A gift that is to be shared.

The Holy Spirit comes in this moment and does not see creed or religion and as angels sang “Great tidings of Joy I bring you.” For in this time your heart will know joy, and it shall know hope and peace but most of all it will know love  and you shall find yourself kinder, and caring, and if a song, or some lights or an ornament or a tree stop to give you pause on your journey to think of how you can make a difference in bettering this kingdom of God than so be it.

The ancients knew that today was a sacred day. The greens are hung, the promise of light returning to the world has begun. The vale between worlds is very thin this day and night.  We have come to the slow time. Embrace it own it. Be in this moment to know that hope is being renewed in the world, that your soul may know peace, and be touched by Joy. But most of all  here in the slow time close your eyes and feel the Love that surrounds you. Search out your divine center and feel that love connect to you to all living things from those close to you to the very depth of the planet.   Take time in all that we have to do over the next few days take a bit of time to  be thankful,   To allow Christmas to deepen our faith.  To honour the Feast of the Nativity To enjoy this Happy Holy Day as we celebrate Christ’s Mass.

May we take time to see the joys which God has given us and in them remember the Love that we know and that we are not alone.  Thanks Be to God.   Amen

Prayers

God’s who love knows no bound open us to the simple knowledge that your coming into the world transcends religious boundaries.  Help us to see that our celebration of the Holy Day of Christ’s Mass is a celebration of your love in the world.  May that love for one brief moment bring joy into someone’s life.  May that Love for one brief moment bring Peace into a troubled world. May that love for one brief moment provide hope for the lost one, the hungry one the frightened one.  We name those who we are called to walk with on this journey who are in need of your presence.   We name those we cherish in our hearts.   We cherish this moment in this place and pray on our Advent journey.   We are grateful for those times of Peace, for they give us hope. We are grateful for your love for it gives us Joy. May we as we move now to the promised gift of your son laid in a manger that we may be a reflection of your compassion to all those who we may meet. We offer you our own personal prayers of Thanksgiving and petitions for your guidance and strength surrounded by the Love we know in this place.  We offer it in the name of Christ Jesus your gift to the world and share the prayer which binds us as one saying..Our Father….
