Jesus is sleeping in his cradle

Ah, Ah, beautiful is her son
Hasten now, Good folk of the village, Hasten now,
the Christ child to see.
You will find him asleep in the manger, quietly come and whisper softly
Hush, hush peacefully now he slumbers,
Hush, hush, peacefully know he sleeps.
Call to Worship:
One: It’s done. It’s done
All What’s done
One the waiting, the watching, the wishing, the welcoming. Its all done Christ is born…alleluia
All But ..it’s not all done
One it’s not?
All No
One Why not
All because if Christmas means anything it has to be lived each day of our lives. This is what we take into the new year
One: The waiting?
All: and the watching
One: The wishing?
All: and the welcoming
One Christmas is today
All and tomorrow
One: and forever
All so let us worship God who invites us to be a Christmas people
One: on the first Sunday of Advent we lit a candle for Hope
All on the second Sunday we lit a candle for peace
One On the third Sunday we lit a candle for joy
All Last Sunday we lit a candle for love now the time has come to light a candle for Christ
One as the flame of Christ candle begins to burn the angels sing, the shepherd draw near and the Magi offer their gifts we too are here with Jesus to offer our gifts and to sing praise to God as they did so long ago in Bethlehem Let us pray.
All: God of light and love Let your Spirit shine in our hearts let your love shine in our world and let the wonder of this new day touch all of our hearts as the Christ child invites us into God’s love Amen
Prayer
Lord as we ponder your words open our hearts that we may understand and know you. Amen
Sermon
As most of you know I have been feeling a bit poorly the last little while. I have come to the conclusion that being sick and single is like being a Mom and being sick. You still have to cook, shop, do the dishes and laundry.
There is an ancient Scandinavian tradition that at Christmas that you set out a bowl of porridge with butter for the benevolent house elves that live in your house. I should have put out porridge and a pound of butter
No one likes being sick. It is a true hiccup with a bit of spit up in ones plans. However, it has forced me to embrace the slow time.
One of the side effects of working at Westfield is that it reminds one of what simpler times may have been like.
As was mentioned last week the Christmas we know was basically the invention of the Victorians.
As I found myself resting I tried to imagine that time before all that we know as Christmas might have been like. When it was a time when The feast of the Nativity, was still a time when the twelve days of Christmas were honoured. A time of Twelfth night gathering and wassail and Wassailing. Wassail drink Ale, a word that means be of good health. Wassail, a weird combination of beer, milk bread and spice.
The slow time has reminded me that this as the simplistic beauty of an un commercialized Christmas. That Christmas was about connecting being with family and friends. To own what is all about.
I was reminded again of the absolute beauty of faces lit with candles singing a beloved carol wrapped in the serene presence of our sanctuary on Christmas eve. Light playing off the Nativity figures faces. A night that gives way to the slow time.
I have been reminded of the simplicity of the Christmas season. No high Catholic robes this year, but a simple cowl. For we all are the simple servants of God.
For the story we are called to hold to in this moment is one of simple love. The love of a mother holding her first child. A love that cannot be explained in any human term. A love that is truly divine. A love that transcends visiting angels, and heavenly hosts, of shepherds crowding in for a look. A love that will move beyond what is yet to come. This is a love that given by God for this moment. This is Christmas.
In the slow time I have sat in the living room, knowing and seeing that the wheel has come full circle. The house lights play across ceiling the Spirit of my Father sits in the chair happy to hear his clocks ticking admiring the lights and commented that there is no glitter in plaster work. The Spirit of my Gramma sits in her chair (which is now my chair) she holds my beloved Scottie talking to her about the beaded bells that her brother had made for her. This is Christmas
It is true The Time will come when you are dragging all the boxes up from the basement to box up Christmas . For some this has happened some of us will hold out for the twelfth night.
It is that time to Reflect once more. Ornaments cherished once more stir a memory, and then laid lovingly away. Nativities boxed once more, lights turned out. Still, still still is the room once more somewhat barren with it’s festiveness stored away. Still, in the cold days of winter the yule tide love remains as we move to new beginning. Life beyond the resolution, which will fail. A new beginning striving for change in our lives a thought that has a better chance then giving up collecting rocks and antiques.
Someone once wrote.
Follow the kindness Where there is kindness go there. Go towards kind people Be a kind person and others will come to you.
Dr. David Hamilton writes Christmas reminds us to be best of who we can be. This is the gift we are called to hold. We are reminded to hold the gift of hope peace joy and love
Follow Jesus, where Jesus is go there
For there you will find hope for the New Year
For there you will find peace in the trouble times
For there you will see the beauty of each day, the kindness of people the joy that this life offers For there you will know love
Embrace Christ’s mass for what it truly is. God with us. Emmanuel reminding us that we are not alone
Prayers of the people
Slow me Down Slow me Down
Still my restless mind Still my restless mind
Quell my fears Quell my Fears
Quench my Thirsty soul Quench my thirsty Soul
Fill me with your love Fill me with your love
God of Truth God of Truth
God of love God of love
Wonderful God we come with thankful hearts to honour the gift you gave to us in the small child which will be the one who will give us the greater gift of life. For some the tree is at the curb and the festive decorations boxed up for another year. For others the light still shines. Here in the holiness of the 12 days of the feast of nativity may we see that the gifts of hope peace joy and love found in this moment will continue to expand and touch lives threw the ministry that we are called to.
We reflect on the waning days of this year and offer prayers for your world. We cannot begin to name those in need but pray that you may be a strength in their troubles. We offer you the names of those whom we are called to walk with and hold them up to you.
We own that the slow time is coming to it’s end. The days lengthen as we begin to journey into the light. We name our loves, our joy. That which brings us peace and that which gives us hope.
We give you thanks for each of our communities of strength for with in them we know that you hear our prayers. We offer you our own personal prayers in this slow time.
We offer you the great prayer which binds us saying our father.
