Call To worship

One: In difficult times past God has called upon the Prophets

All God calls on the Prophets to speak the truth in love

All Jesus called them to help him proclaim the good news

One God calls us like he did the Prophets and the disciples

All We too will let God lead us and will answer the call.

Sermon

I can imagine one of the joys parenting is having your child come bursting into the room overflowing with excitement just grabbing your hand and squealing  come and see come and see.  You follow with a touch of anticipation sharing in your child’s joy but with an equal measure of “can anything good come of this”   What will you find. A wonderful picture or your youngest child covered in glue stick and glitter.

Philip is called by Jesus, and Philip is so excited about this He goes to find his bestey Nathanael.   Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him about whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.” And now one of my favorite lines because it is so human.   Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”  Like a parent taking the hand of their child to go see some wonder with a certain amount of expectation to finding a disaster Nathanael says fine, leaving his rather comfortable spot under the fig tree he goes to see.

The excitement of something new is held in that phrase “come and see”  It speaks of accomplishment, or discovery.  It speaks of witness.

There is something in us that want’s to be seen, that says come and see.  See what I have done. That desire for affirmation.  More so than ever due to social media one could say this has almost for some become the only way of measuring self worth.   The idea of the private person is lost in the soul bearing posts of Facebook or Instagram.  People come and see, see me and like me, follow me. If I get so many likes or follows I win Silver, or gold or Diamond or dream beyond dream Red Diamond.  The fragile human ego hangs by the thread of a Like and subscribe.

Just recently a Medieval wall paintings that had been hidden for almost 300 years was uncovered by builders working in a roof space at a Cambridge University college England.

The artworks were found during restoration work at Christ's College.

The paintings celebrated the royal patron of Christ's College during the early 16th Century.

The college was first established as God's House in 1437 before moving to its present site in 1448. It was re-founded as Christ's College in 1505 by Henry VII's mother, Lady Margaret Beaufort.

"A powerful and pious woman, with a keen interest in scholarship, Lady Margaret left her indelible mark on the college," Dr Faraday the University Historian  said. "The wall paintings are an early example of her family's savvy use of visual 'branding' even beyond the royal court.

"Henry VII had a very weak claim to the throne but became adept at using visual symbols like this to promote his kingship.

"The motifs continue to be tied up with the college's identity to this day, but as an early example of Tudor 'marketing', the wall paintings demonstrate the long history of something we think of as a modern phenomenon.

"Such survivals are extremely unusual."

The desire for likes in social media is not new, just different.

The desire for likes in social media is not new, just different.

We want to be seen as an open welcoming community of faith, that get’s its fare share of likes.

But we are called not to be seen but to seek.

Michael Rogness a theologian in his commentary on this text states.

Our task as Christians is not to “prove” the truth of the Christian faith, although many scholars have written persuasively of the truth of Christianity. Our task is not even to persuade others to become Christian. Our task is to say, “Come and see.”

Philip could have given Nathanael some of his own opinions. He could have said, “This Jesus knows a lot about the Bible.” Or he might have said, “There is something about this man Jesus that draws me to him.” Even when Nathanael expressed skepticism about “anything good coming out of Nazareth,” Philip might have listed some successful people from Nazareth.

But no: Philip simply said, “Come and see,” as if to say, “You don’t need me to advertise for Jesus; come and see for yourself.”   So, Nathaniel came and saw for himself.

Come and see. Come and see who we are at Freelton Strabane. Not what we do but who we are.

We are a people that have come to know that in the hardships of life that God is not in the event but in what comes next the love of those that surround us.   We are called to help people come and see this. This love of God.  To feel the support and presence of community.  To have that sense of belonging.    Come and see who we are, a community who values the gifts, the time, the talent that you may share for in valuing these we see God in you.

This is what our call is to be here at Freelton Strabane United Church To live our discipleship with integrity and grace.

Come and see, see the grace eternal, come and see the love of God in community come and see that you, that we are not alone. Thanks be to God. Amen.

Prayers of the people

Slow me Down  Slow me Down

Still my restless mind Still my restless mind

Quell my fears Quell my Fears

Quench my Thirsty soul Quench my thirsty Soul

Fill me with your love Fill me with your love

God of Truth God of Truth

God of love   God of love

Blessed Lord in the quietude of our contemplation you come to us in many ways saying “come and See” Come and see the wonder of the world that has been created.  Come and see those that need your presence.  We look at the world and we see grave injustice. We see hypocritical governments that claim to be defending their rights but are truly perusing there own end through persecution while screaming prejudice.   We see poverty and human brokenness.    We hear you to come and see but must ask “what shall we do” And you whisper, pray for my people, pray for my creation for in prayer all things are possible.

You call us to come and see those who we know, who need us to walk with them, to listen to them and hear their pain. We pray for them naming them before you.

You call us to come and know the joy of what it is to be in community, You call us to come and know what it is to be surrounded by your love.  May we hear our calling and follow where you would go. We come to this time to be in the silence and offer you our own prayers.  We trust that in your time and your way they will be answered.  We offer the great prayer which you gave us saying…Our Father…
