 Gathering

Three things I promise Holy God,

In age and youth, in life and death:

To bless your Name and cling to Christ

And listen for the Spirit’s breath.

Call To worship

One We at times long for that something that gives us security

All  We long at times for that which will give us courage.

One Something that will see us safely through the night.

All A Teddy bear?

One We have something even greater than a Teddy bear.

All What?

One God is there to give us security, to give us courage to see us safely through those long nights of life that we may face. May we be open to the unexpected, the new, the different that God presents to us.

 Prayer of Approach

God of presence when we were young you gave us such things as Teddy bears to our friend, our confidant, our fellow explorer, someone to hold us as pretended to hold when all was wrong and the tears would not stop. Today as we gather once more to spend this time with you we have come to know that you are the one who holds us, the one we can speak to but most of all journey with into this large world.  Fill us with your Spirit in this time so that we may continue to grow in our understanding of You with us in this world.

One: Let us lift up our voices in Psalm our psalm is  Psalm 13

Prayer

Lord as we ponder your words open our hearts that we may understand and know you. Amen

Sermon

This is God’s wondrous world each marvelous morning.  Each day dawns and the world begins to wake.  As the sun crests the day you cannot help but think… but wonder “as God creates the new day does God think. “hmm what adventure shall I set before my people today, what wonder will be revealed to them and how will they receive it?

Each day we are given to seek out the wonder of God. To be open to the Spirit’s leading

So, if, you go down in the woods today    You're sure of a big surprise    If you go down in the woods today    You'd better go in disguise!

Why? you may ask.   Is it that we don’t want to disturb the wild life?  Are we lying in wait for the perfect picture

No. For if you go down in the woods today, you may surmise that

For every bear that ever there was     Will gather there for certain   Because today's the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic.  Just Teddy Bears?

Well no, not just Teddy Bears.   For you see at the Teddy bear’s picnic in the wood’s today you won’t be surprised, and you won’t need a disguise, for every bear there knows, that all should be fair and the Bears gather all those that would like to share in the fare there.  For The bears are truly a welcoming  bears and quick to offer a chair

So if you go down in the woods today you’re sure of a big surprise because on the road , or on the path near the grass, these wonderful friends from our childhood past, those friends that find new young people to comfort and assure are gathering   there.

You see those stuffy little friends may not walk or talk but you see they have been and always will be a gift of love.  They are charged in the Spirit to always listen, offer hugs and most of all unconditional love.

That is why they are so welcoming.

This is why for many child and adult alike  there is a heart warming when we encounter the love of Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin and all their friends.  They are open and welcoming in their love . The gospel speaks of welcoming Love

Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”

Little ones, children that is, and most certainly Teddy bears, don’t see the artificial boundaries we create as adults.  They don’t see race or religion or economic status. They see friends and potential friends. When a child see someone hurt they have compassion. They see the world in a constant state of awe and wonder and Teddy bears that are real as you and me.     It is not until they begin to grow in the world do they learn biases and prejudices that separate us.   They lose that sense of Welcoming love.

Jesus often holds children in higher regard then they were normally seen. They are in many ways the unseen in Jesus’s day.

So to even welcome one with something as simple as a cup of water is to see the world through compassionate and caring eyes.

The gospel calls us to be an open and welcoming community.

To gather together in one place to share the blanket so to speak.

Not only to allow this place to be a place of welcome, but to grow our spiritualty and to share our faith, in how we live our lives  to share the word of God found in scripture

When we become adults and put our Teddy Bears away, whether treasured or lost we also but away our imagination which allows us to imagine them sneaking out of the house for a picnic  When we go into the woods we do not go expecting surprises, we know the path and figure that there will be mosquitoes.

In striving to be a welcoming community we must not  lose sight of our need to continue welcoming  God into our lives.  To walk a different path.   Not just to do dinners and the like to maintain the building, not just to give money or goods or time for outreach (and these are all very important to our life and work as the church in our communities , but,  perhaps first and foremost to nurture our spiritual self.  May we not only be a welcoming community, but a community that greets adventure and wonder of God’s Spirit.

As for Teddy Bears?  Everyone knows that at  six o'clock their Mommies and Daddies Will take them home to bed for they are tired little Teddy Bears.

For us the sun will not set upon us.  For the cross of Christ is always over us, the love of God will always surrounds us and the adventure and wonder of the Holy Spirit will always lead us on reminding  at the end of our day and in the promise of the new day again and again that we are not alone. Thanks Be to God.

Prayers of the people

Slow me Down  Slow me Down

Still my restless mind Still my restless mind

Quell my fears Quell my Fears

Quench my Thirsty soul Quench my thirsty Soul

Fill me with your love Fill me with your love

God of Truth God of Truth

God of love   God of love

Blessed God, we are reminded of the words of our Lord “knock and the door shall be opened.  The door that is opened is the boundless love and joyful welcome when we knock and you answer.   Help us to with a joyful heart open the doors of our lives when we hear your Holy Spirit knock.  May we welcome the invitation to go out and experience new ways of thinking. May we say yes to the invitation to sit in the quiet curve of evening and watch the painted colours of the sunset.  May we open the doors of this place and say welcome to who ever comes to this place so that they may know the same love that we have found in you.

As Jesus came to homes to bring healing, so do we bring our prayers for healing to you.  Healing for a broken world of war, and suffering. Prayers for an injured planet which longs to be loved back to wholeness.  We bring those names of those who we are called to journey with to you.

We bring the many names of those who we will never know

We bring our own prayers, help us never to lose the wonder of your world, or drift from your care.  Be with us in this time and hear our prayers spoken in the silence of our hearts.  We trust and know that you in your time and way will answer our prayers.  We say together the great prayer which you give us saying Our Father….

One: Praise God who from all Blessing flow

Prayer  Your grace, O God, is a gift that nothing can match. The greatest offering we can make is to live according to your will. Grant wings to these gifts, that they may soar to do your bidding. Bring a melody to our lips, that our days may be songs of praise. In Christ,’ service Amen
