Sermon
The big events are over, The Easter, assentation, Pentecost Trinity Sunday, and we move into the role up your sleeves and serve, the meat and potatoes of the gospel. The teaching. I believe that Gospels, have the wow inspire, renew the faith sections and then there is all that what popular culture speaks of the WWJD stuff, yes the What would Jesus Do (or say) stuff. I guess you could call it applied theology.
Here in the gospel we find some of that applied teaching. Jesus is asked by a Roman Centurion, clearly an officer to heal a beloved servant The Centurion knows who he is what he represents sends a servant then eventually speaks to Jesus.
Jesus was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: "LORD, don't trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. 7That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." 9When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, "I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel." 10Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.

Jesus was amazed. Amazed at such faith from a Roman, a foreigner. Now Jesus could have said. Well you know he is not Jewish. Jesus however is amazed at the faith that this person has, a faith that does not even need to see Jesus.

Jesus as we will see as we move through what is known as common time, the season after Pentecost that Jesus again and again, not just preaches but demonstrates a ministry of tolerance and acceptance.

Jesus is the one who reaches out to the marginalized in society. The poor, the rejected, women, Samartians and other foreigners.

Let’s be honest, if Jesus had been born in the modern age he would have been a baby boomer. Born in the late 50s. Yes it’s true I think Jesus would have been ultimate hippy. Well he did have the hair and beard going on for him.

Consider what the gospel teaches and then look at the lyrics of music of the early 60’s

Peter Paul and Mary  (very biblical)  If I had a hammer
It's the hammer of Justice,
It's the bell of Freedom,
It's the song about Love between my brothers and my sisters,
All over this land.

Blowing in the Wind

Bob Dylan

How many roads must a man walk down
Before they call him a man
How many sea must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand
How many times must those cannon balls be fired
Before they're forever banned
Oh yeah let me tell you that
The answer my friend is blowing in the wind
The answer is blowing in the wind

The teaching’s of Jesus is one of openness and tolerance.

What does this look like for us as a people of God, in the United Church

This coming week on June 21st the Church honours National Indigenous day    our churches are built on the traditional lands of the Neutral Confederacy.  The United Church has owned that in our enthusiasm to spread the gospel we failed to see the deep spirituality of the Indigenous people.  Yes it is true we have been a part of the Indigenous cultural genocide and not just on the fringe.    We as a church continue to strive towards truth and reconciliation.    This month has been Pride month a time to recognize the struggles and discrimination of the LBGTQ community.   The United Church has owned that all are welcome within the bounds of our church regardless of their sexual orientation.

Decades ago we owned that Women are welcome and called to the pulpit to minister and proclaim the gospel  not just to make the tea.

All of this a reflection of Christ’s teaching and we have so much more to learn.

We are called today to continue to open our hearts and minds through the spirit to those teaching to see the value in other people to see our own value.

Consider this A bar of iron cost $5 Made into horse shoes it is worth $12

Made into needles it is worth $3500

Made into balance springs for watches $300,000

Your Value is determent by what you are able to make of yourselves. Do not short change yourself.

We are called by God to see value in those we encounter in our lives. We are called by God to see the value of everyone who enters into our community of faith

We are called by God to be open accepting to share the treasure that is contained within these stone walls.  The treasure of the love of God, the wisdom of Christ and the fellowship of God’s spirit among us.

The Spirit is among us it is blown on the wind. , is rung like a bell proclaiming the faith and is lived out in our willingness to be open and accepting.  For we are not alone thanks be to God.

Prayers

God of journey, truly there are rhythms in our faith journey. We are thankful for the joyous seasons celebrating you with us.   You have travelled with us from the cradle to the cross, from the glory of the Easter event and great gift of the Spirit.  As we move into living out of our faith and we move away from the big events that we are able to still ourselves to now see your presence in our lives in the quiet moments of our lives.  May we reflect on how we are called to live our faith.  May we in our reflections, see the great value in ourselves as you have seen it in us.  We know that there are many who’s lives are such a struggle they may not know your presence. For all  who seek justice, who seek freedom, who seek security may you be with them.   We pray for those that Seek healing and wholeness of body and of mind.  We hold up all those that are in need.   We name those who are a part of our journey who are in need of your holy presence.  We pray for ourselves, and our church. We pay for wisdom and wholeness.  Lord hear our prayers and calm our hearts to know your presence here. We offer these prayers and the prayers of our hearts here in the sanctuary of your love.  We offer you the great prayer which you gave us through your Son, Jesus the Christ. Saying  our Father….
